'Let pupils learn Mandarin and Arabic'

…schools had encouraged many children to drop languages — seen by many as one of the hardest GCSEs to pass — because failure affected their position on exam league tables.

Since compulsory languages were axed in 2004, the proportion of pupils taking them at GCSE has fallen from 80 per cent to 50 per cent.

In more than 40 schools, no pupils studied a foreign language beyond age 14.
